An
ebriefing from Cathy Fyock and Innovative Management Concepts
Shelly,
What Are You Thankful For?
I
love the month of Thanksgiving, and it’s not necessarily about
turkey, pumpkin pie, and the cranberry sauce, although I like those
parts, too. Never in the year do we have a better chance than in
November to reflect on our many blessings.
As a businesswoman with nearly 20 years leading my HR consulting
and speaking business, I have a lot to be thankful for. Here’s just
a partial list of my blessings.
- Thanks for the human resources profession—the best profession
in the world—that allows us to support our organizations in
achieving their strategic goals and objectives, and to impact the
lives of our employees in meaningful ways each and every day. What
an awesome privilege!
- Thanks for the great HR thinkers and educators who influence
our roles as strategic business partners. We owe a great deal to
your leadership and vision.
- Thanks for business leaders who continue to see the strategic
influence of HR and who value the contribution of our profession.
- Thanks for line managers and supervisors who continue to do
exasperating things each day, providing HR professionals with
interesting and challenging work and loads of job security!
- Thanks for our employees, who challenge us with their
questions and issues, and who help us see better ways of doing
things, when we let them.
- Thanks for professional associations such as SHRM, which
support human resources by serving the professional and advancing
the profession.
- And most of all, thanks for the wonderful friends and
colleagues I’ve been able to work with in my 20 years in business.
What a blessing you have been! Thanks so much for your business
and most importantly, your friendship!
Happy Thanksgiving!

One Minute Recognition as a Retention Tool
Ken Blanchard in One Minute Manager stresses the
importance of giving ongoing feedback to employees, especially when
you catch them doing something right. Consider these suggestions for
keeping your people motivated and engaged.
- Let employees know on-the-spot when they’ve done something
well. Say “thank you,” smile, and show appreciation for what
they’ve done.
- Be specific. It’s not enough to say, “Good job.” What made
this behavior worthy of recognition? Let employees know the
specifics about their accomplishments.
- Document good deeds, and reinforce these during performance
evaluations. By documenting specific behaviors, you’ll be able to
recall what made their performance worthy of a high rating or
performance pay increase.
- Make recognition known to coworkers. Thank employees publicly,
but coach problem behaviors privately.

Cathy Fyock, CSP, SPHR, is an employment strategist—helping
organizations develop strategies to recruit and retain top talent in
an aging and changing marketplace. For nearly 20 years she has
combined her knowledge of work-force issues and her talents as a
speaker to provide innovative and inspirational learning events. She
has helped organizations attract top talent, reduce turnover, and
improve productivity in a volatile labor market.
Praise for Cathy’s programs
Cathy Fyock developed a three-day selection course for us at
Bridgestone/Firestone, and has been instrumental in delivering the
pilot course and subsequent train- the-trainer courses for our zone
management. Cathy has impressed us by combining our own ideas about
what was needed in the training, and her own experience in this
field. As a result, she has created an exciting course that
specifically addresses our needs and is helping us to select better
candidates, which we believe will ultimately result in more
productive and loyal employees. We highly recommend Cathy as an
instructional designer, as an employment strategist, and as an
effective trainer."
